I Have Returned

I'm back.
I'm also half dead (or worse) from very long flights in spaces so cramped they'd be illegal for laboratory animals.

Recovery time will be necessary.

It's Aliiiive

I'm well on my way to piecing back together what I can of the contents of my computer. In fact, I'm typing this on my computer (the real one, not the netbook).

Naturally, when I installed the OS, I went ahead and installed Fedora 20, rather than reinstalling Fedora 19. Windows? Yeah, I have it on a partition somewhere. Heck, I even boot it up a couple of times a year.

Biggest point of pain so far is that I managed to lose a chunk of email from the period between the last backup and the crash. In fact, I was afraid at first that I'd lost it all, but I was able to recover the majority of it, including (I think) all that was sent to my HSaotomeSan gmail address.

Still a ways to go, but - I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I'll probably finish the reconstruction just in time to catch the flight for my business trip at the end of next week.

It's Dead, Jim

The computer hard disk died completely this time. Everything on it is irretrievable.

Fortunately, all of my most critical data is completely backed up. That includes, for those of you who were wondering, my fanfic writings and notes.

Now I just need to get the new hard disk installed, reinstall the OS, all software, restore what I have backed up, and ... still wail and moan over some of the less critical data which was lost.

In any event, I expect to be confined to using a tiny little netbook for the next few days. Which is what I'm typing this on right now.

Oh, and just to make sure I have oodles of time to put everything back in my computer the way I had it, my company has decided to send me on a week-long business trip out of the country later this month. (Grumble, mumble.)

GD chapter 7 update

I've completed the morning scene for chapter 7 (Day 19), which sets up for what will hopefully be some interesting events in the afternoon. This day's target is Nabiki.

Greenery Day, Day 19 (1)

After watching the police haul off the tranquilized panda for the fourth morning in row, Ranma walked into a nearby café and ordered breakfast for himself. He wanted to mull over his plans for the day one more time before putting them into effect. Or trying to put them into effect. After all, things didn't always go quite the way he intended.

He had managed to get the Tendo girls to tell him quite a lot about themselves the last three days, and even paid attention. He knew that Kasumi had a fair bit more experience than she wanted either of her sisters to know about, as well as some pretty quirky ideas, like her whole ‘boys shouldn't touch semen’ attitude. It had given him considerable amusement to maneuver her into saying more than she intended in front of the other two girls, and watching her blush afterward. The looks of shock on Akane's face were kind of priceless as well.

In almost direct contrast, Nabiki tried to pretend to more experience than she truly had. Although she never came straight out and claimed anything that wasn't true, still she danced around the truth trying to get him to draw the wrong conclusions. After sifting her words for the last few days, however, he was nearly certain that she hadn't done anything more than kiss a boy so far. A smile touched his lips as he reflected on his plan to make use of that tendency to imply she'd done more than she really had.

The youngest sister, Akane, hadn't even kissed a boy. She had some darned unflattering opinions about guys in general, although in those instances where her sisters persuaded her to set those attitudes aside for a few moments, she could demonstrate an innocent curiosity about sex — and his body in particular — which was always guaranteed to make him rock hard. And to be honest with himself, once she had explained about the morning fights with the idiots at her school, he found that he couldn't blame her too much for her opinions. It was a pity that every day was Sunday for him, and he couldn't make a trip to her school to beat the shit out of all those assholes himself, but he had played with the notion of hunting down this Kuno fellow one day and putting him in the hospital until the time loop reset.

Computer and GD

The computer seems to be behaving so far. Thank God. I've gotten a fair bit written on the next chapter of Greenery Day. I plan to skip forward a few days, and review what happened on the intervening days in recall and flashbacks, rather than going into extensive detail on Ranma's minor variations on what he's already done. The idea is to skip to the next significantly new thing he tries.

Up and Down

So, as everyone reading this blog is aware, I posted another piece of Greenery Day last night. I was feeling darn good about that when I went to bed.

Then I get up this morning and boot up my computer. Or try to. It reported a disk error and failed to boot. And the same again, when I rebooted (hoping the previous error was a fluke). And another failure when I tried to reboot into recovery mode. As you might imagine I was feeling a bit queasy by then.

I've spent all day, outside of the time I was at the office, wrestling with it. On the plus side, it appears that only the partition containing the operating system was affected, and the data partitions are still clean. Which means, worst comes to worst, I can probably get by with a reformat, isolation of the bad clusters, and reinstallation of the OS. I'm hoping it won't come to that. At the moment it looks like I've repaired the partition, and the only corrupted files were ones I didn't care about (like obscure documentation, and icons for programs I've never used and don't intend to use). I'm keeping my fingers crossed though, to see what the coming days will bring.
