It's Dead, Jim

The computer hard disk died completely this time. Everything on it is irretrievable.

Fortunately, all of my most critical data is completely backed up. That includes, for those of you who were wondering, my fanfic writings and notes.

Now I just need to get the new hard disk installed, reinstall the OS, all software, restore what I have backed up, and ... still wail and moan over some of the less critical data which was lost.

In any event, I expect to be confined to using a tiny little netbook for the next few days. Which is what I'm typing this on right now.

Oh, and just to make sure I have oodles of time to put everything back in my computer the way I had it, my company has decided to send me on a week-long business trip out of the country later this month. (Grumble, mumble.)

  2. That's frustrating but thankfully you saved your most important data.
So hopefully it won't deny us the opportunity to read your next chapter ^_^ Ranma hard "disk" will not die with Nabiki, it will increase its data ^_^

  4. after my last total crash, I started using the system image backup offered by Windows. Saving to an external hard drive. Creates, as far as I can tell, a clone of your hard drive. Using a recovery disk that will allow you to access the external Hard Drive, you can fully restore your system on a new hard drive in the case of a full system failure.

I have a weekly backup scheduled.

External hard Drives are pretty cheap these days, especially if you limit yourself to a Terra Bit drive.

  5. I am planning to take steps to have automated backups, once I get everything reinstalled and up and running again. After I get the computer back with the new hard drive, which I'm supposed to in about three hours.

    1. Oh, you must be glad to have it back. If you have Windows, you could use Skydrive for the automated saves?
Did you use this opportunity to upgrade your computer?

    2. Nah, didn't upgrade. It's only a year old, and it was pretty powerful to begin with. There's nothing I use it for that justifies an upgrade at this time.
