The idea came into my head to have Genma and Ranma show up in a Nerima where everyone's genders are the opposite of canon (except for Nodoka). Genma and Ranma are the same - male, with curses to turn into a panda and a girl.
So they show up at the Tendo home where Kimiko Tendo's husband Soun died young, leaving her to raise their three sons: Kazuma, Noburo and Akeno. Kazuma is a second year premed student, and has seduced and is having an ongoing affair with local nurse Toku Ono, who acts extremely shy and nervous around Kazuma. Genma had promised his old friend Soun on his deathbed that one day their families would be united, that he and Nodoka would have a daughter who would marry one of Soun's sons. Except he didn't have any more children, only the son he already had, Ranma. (Kimiko by the way knows about the promise but doesn't know anything about Nodoka or Ranma.). So Genma took him on a long training trip, teaching him to be a great martial artist, but secondarily looking for an answer to his oath. He found it when he heard about the cursed springs of Jusenkyo, and purposely got his son cursed to turn into a girl. Of course, he hadn't expected to be cursed himself.
On the way to the Tendo house, Genma deliberately gets them caught in the rain so that Ranma arrives in girl form. The eyes of all three sons light up at the sight of the pretty redhead. When the curse is revealed, Genma explains that Ranma has a reversed curse, she is a girl cursed to turn into a boy at the touch of hot water. However, it should be quite easy to keep cold water handy to turn her back into a girl whenever she accidentally turns into a boy.
Naturally, Ranma protests. Genma explains that she's just nervous about the whole engagement thing, trying to get out of it because the idea scares her. And these claims about being a boy are just nonsense that she's making up as part of that. All that should be necessary is for one of the boys to convince Ranma of how great it is to be a girl, and particularly to be that boy's fiancee ...

DeleteThis sort of plot idea has been used a few times, if my memory serves me right, but I don't think there's been one that could actually be considered to be good.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see someone writing a story with this premise, as it is quite interesting and filled with potential. The interaction between Ranma and the three Tendo brothers could end up being truly hilarious; especially if they all have it in their interest to stake a claim on the hot redhead! ;D

Mind, if I wrote this it would be a lemon. Ranma would find himself treated as a girl, and the brothers - or at least one of them - would have sex with her. And Ranma would end up liking it, probably to her horror.
ReplyDeleteIn the original there were several situations where Ranma was trapped as a girl. Here you'd likely see Genma actively seeking out that posibility. And he might have come up with something before appearing at the Tendo house. Indeed, maybe while Ranma thought they were roaming around China looking for a cure, Genma was actually looking for a way to seal Ranma as a girl. She'd have a lot harder time convincing anyone she was really a boy if she can't produce a male form.
ReplyDeleteShampoo would not be an Amazon, obviously, but a Musk warrior. The Musk no longer uses the springs to turn Animals into wives, but instead have turned to improving their blood lines by marrying strong women. After Ranma-chan defeated Shampoo, would need a spice type version for a name, he became determined to make her his bride, and is not too fussy about how he goes about this.
Possible that he encountered Ranma when Genma stole the locking ladle, temporarily, to seal Ranma.
Shampoo might be the only one who believes that Ranma was originaly a boy, and doesn't give a damn.
Mousse would be an Amazon warrior who has his eyes on Shampoo, but Shampoo had rejected her because of her bad eyes.
Shampoo might have tiger ancestry to keep in line with the cat curse.
Gender swapping everyone might make things too contrived. For instance you already have a male and female Kuno, so all you'd need to do is switch their involment in the story.
The whole hentai hoard might work if Kodachi promised to date anyone who could defeat Akeno. Who rejected her advances earlier in the year. Of course just what she has promised might have gotten a bit twisted in the boy's minds.
Kuno attends an all boy's school, and is desperate to find a girlfriend.
Ukyou. I've long had this idea about Genma pulling off a "Some like it hot," scenario where he and Ranma were pretending to be female to escape some Yakusa when they met Ukyou. Ranma would not even have had to dress up, and might not even have known that Genma was saying he was her daughter. Ranma might even have accepted the young Ukyou's marriage proposal because it meant he would get to eat her food every single day for the rest of his life.
All interesting ideas. I'm not seriously thinking about writing this at the moment, but if I were I'd have to give some major thought to limiting it in some fashion. I wouldn't want to try to rewrite the entire series.
DeleteAnother pretty mean variety: all the characters have their original gender except Ranma( "accidentaly" locked in cursed female form ), while the fathers are some pretty evil perverts. So the plan is to bond female Ranma with Soun to complete the union of the schools( at least done once before ).
ReplyDeleteUsualy as a dark fic. I'd prefer the idea that the father's would come up with the idea of cursing one of the girls. Mind you, if they had the ability to turn one of the girl's into a guy, then there would have to be some reason why they didn't use it on Ranma.
DeleteAnother option would be for their to just be one Tendo son, and the real conflict is whether Ranma-chan hooks up with him, or Ranma-kun hooks up with one of the girls.
